New York City has always been a hub for creators, however, its resurgent drill wave is redefining the city’s soundscape. Rowdy Rebel is not only a pioneer for NYC’s gritty, street-centric sound, but has teased his long-awaited return with a flurry of singles and features since his release from prison late last year.
Now, Rowdy’s proper debut album — and his first project since 2016 — is finally here. Showcasing his work since coming home from his six-year prison bid, Rebel vs. Rowdy is the quality comeback fans have been waiting for.
Featuring appearances from fellow New York natives Fivio Foreign, French Montana, A Boogie, Jadakiss and more, Rowdy leads in the project with a string of drill bangers before slowing down for the back half of the record, starting at “New York” with Boogie and Jada.
“Bitch, I’m too sauce
She won’t catch me cuddlin’ in my Cullinan
Especially when I’m outside bubblin’
Yeah, shawty sexy, but, I really want a friend
Knowin’ if I hit it once, I’m probably gon’ hit again”
Rowdy Rebel — “New York”
These last few tracks, with the exception of standout single “Rowdy vs. Rebel,” display a whole new side to Rowdy and his music — bringing a sense of sonic versatility to the rapper’s rather energetic demeanor.
Rowdy’s last LP, Shmoney Keeps Calling, released two years into his jail sentence, which gave Rowdy another four years to prep his huge comeback. Despite how much the industry has changed in the last few years, his ability to integrate himself with New York’s newcomers in Fivio and Kay Flock has been nothing short of impressive.
With Rebel vs. Rowdy, the rapper has proven yet again that he’s here to stay — repping New York until the very end.
