Despite Halloween being nearly six weeks ago, Mike Dimes brought a Goonies energy to his eerie new single “Fleek” (Dec. 13).
Off the back of the Internet Money-produced “TALK2ME” and “247,” “Fleek” builds off the bold tones Dimes has become known for on records like In Dimes We Trust and his debut project Dlog. However, the track is a stark contrast to the Texas rising star’s party-centric efforts as of late — sounding more brash and villainous than ever before.
Perhaps emulating the energy found on Metro Boomin’s Heroes & Villains, Dimes makes his case to be on Metro’s radar for its inevitable deluxe — methodically flowing over the spooky, space-infused beat with ease. The track ultimately possesses that infallible energy that makes Mike Dimes so connective to new wave listeners.
With daunting visuals (directed by Griffin Olis) that depict Dimes and his crew trekking through a pitch-black forest, the “Home” emcee’s prolific 2022 is seemingly set to trickle into the new year. Taking to Instagram to ask fans if they “want an album soon,” “Fleek” could very be the precursor to a forthcoming rollout in the near future.
It’s a come-up story hard not to root for, and “Fleek” is just the latest step of many for the Texas-based mainstay — triumphantly hitting his stride as one of the new wave’s most captivating lyricists.
