Three years since Smino’s pandemic tape She Already Decided dropped on SoundCloud, the smooth-flowing St. Louis emcee is coming back for seconds.
Revealing he “just found” his SC password a month ago, Smi celebrated by sharing an off-the-cuff, surprise freestyle fittingly titled “smi myself & I” on Wednesday (Feb. 8). Paired with a behind-the-scenes visual of Smino on his “Luv Is 4Ever Tour” with JID, “smi myself & I” — and his latest effort “Wyoming (Freestyle)” (March 10) — reasserts his type of talent comes once in a generation.
“New project I let Dram do it, no Gangsta had a grill,” he flows effortlessly over classic R&B synths and an infectious 2000s-era bounce. That new project he’s rapping about is She Already Decided 2, which is confirmed for release on April 20 according to the track’s description. Whether Gangsta Grillz legend DJ Drama is involved, that remains to be seen. However, all seems point to Smi including the legendary producer-artist on the record. “Wyoming (Freestyle)” is a groovy off-kilter cut that oozes swagger from Smi, speaking on coin flips that further prove his sound is inimitable in the game.
Ahead of its sequel, She Already Decided (2020) — which also dropped on April 20 — touted many memorable holdovers in “Fronto Isley,” “Chips & Juice,” “2MuchFronto” and remixes of tracks like Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage” and Baby Keem’s “Orange Soda.”
Smino’s third studio album, Luv 4 Rent, released last October and proved to be a poetic exposé on the different types of love life presents. The singer-rapper’s refined lyrical poise and slant rhyme cadences make him a pure sonic anamoly, as the 15-track LP brought on featured acts in Lil Uzi Vert, Ravyn Lenae, J. Cole, Lucky Daye, Doechii, Monte Booker and more.
It’s clear that Smino never misses, and when the project drops on “4/20,” be sure to sit back, spark up and spin S.A.D. 2 with Smi.
