NYC’s slizziest artist-producer Cash Cobain celebrated his birthday last week (March 31) with a surprise mixtape, Slizzy Day.
Over the last two years, Cash Cobain and the rest of the Slizzy crew have created one of the city’s most exciting movements around their Sexy Drill sound. Defined by vibey production, carefree X-rated bars and clever samples (many of which are produced by Cash himself), the fun-loving and forward-thinking style is showcased across the new EP – accompanied by features from Lil Yachty, Vontee and Tata. And of course, these beats are “From Cash not from Youtube.”
The 6-track tape is the perfect introduction for latecomers to the Sexy Drill sound. It walks listeners through all the hallmarks of the signature slizzy style, from vibey melodies to saucy samples to admittedly outrageous bars. While one of the keys to his success has been his raw feel, Cash sounds as polished as ever on the new project – hopefully serving as a precursor to an official album coming sometime this year.
One of the most noteworthy things about Cash Cobain is his love of classic R&B samples. The project features samples from Slizzy staples like Aaliyah and SWV, in addition to more recent yet equally nostalgic flips from artists like Miguel, Kirko Bangz and Seddy Hendrinx. As for features, Cash is joined by Vontee on “Weak” and 41’s Tata on “At Your Best,” easily the bounciest entry on the tape following their popular Jersey Club-inspired linkup on “Back It Up” last year.
Very notably, Lil Yachty joined Cash for what may be his biggest feature yet. On “No More Bodies,” Boat perfectly matches his energy with some pretty hilarious X-rated bars of his own as they float over an infectious “Not from Youtube” flipped sample of Tems’ “Essence” vocals. The pair have linked once before when Cash produced the fan-favorite “Lexy Sove” off Yachty’s 2021 Birthday Mix 6.
Cash is already off to a strong start in 2023 following a big year. While some might categorize his sound as niche or underground, he received praise from just about every mainstream outlet in 2022 – named one of ‘11 Artists to Watch in 2023’ by Rolling Stone and receiving ‘Album of the Year’ nods from The New York Times, Pitchfork and Uproxx for his joint album with Chow Lee, 2 Slizzy 2 Sexy. Not to mention co-signs from Frank Ocean, Drake’s OVO sound, LUCKI, Yachty and many more of the coolest kids around.
As fans and tastemakers continue to acquire a taste for the Sexy Drill sound, there’s no doubt Cash Cobain’s star will continue to rise on both sides of the boards as one of the game’s most infectious and innovative artist-producers.
