TyFontaine wows once again on 18-track mixtape ‘WTF is P!NK’

Two months removed from releasing his sophomore independent album Beautiful Michi Girls, “Mixtape Michi” is already back in action. Surprising fans with an off-handed announcement on Thursday (July 28), TyFontaine returned for his second project of the year in WTF is P!NK (July 29).

Holding a total of 18 tracks — which includes previous singles in “Good T!mes,” “When The Lights Go Out,” “b4 the Cløut” and his latest “One Of One” — the High Tide founder initially clued us in to his mixtape era back in March. Bringing his “P!NK” persona to life on WTF is P!NK — perhaps drawing from Lil Uzi Vert’s The Pink Tape and SoFaygo’s Pink HeartzFontaine continues to prove he’s the underground star everyone else is catching up to.

WTF is P!NK is an ultimate summertime holdover for Fontaine’s next full-length album Ascension 2. Highlights in “Good T¡mes” and “Cal!forn!a Dream!ng” see the WTFIP emcee revert back to his eccentric pop-laced sound — utilizing his immaculate, high-pitched singing to create an immediate vibe for the summer. He floats over “Good T!mes” atmosperhic, synth-infused production that conjures images of a nighttime drive as the sun sets warmly in the distance.

Another highlight in “b4 the cløut” drips with swagger from start to finish, as Fontaine shows his flawless balance between bars and vocals. “I ain’t check my statement in months, I ain’t even know the amount,” he swoonly sing-raps — wholeheartedly bodying the atmospheric pluggnb cut with ease. “My Level” and his latest effort “One Of One” further showcases Ty’s rap chops — flexing over a pair of hard-hitting instrumentals that reasserts his star power and stake in the underground.

Along with releasing the video for “Schemes” on Tuesday (Aug. 2) under his High Tide imprint, independence continues to look great on Michi. The project itself is not only another versatile offering from the DMV hitmaker, but unveils his evolution as a borderless creative for the new wave. While WTF is P!NK came as a surprise, it further proves Fontaine is here to stay.
