Cash Cobain has been on fire to start the summer. Here’s our five favorite tracks (so far) from the Sexy Drill pioneer in 2024.
Earlier this year, Slizzy Fest—a concert hosted by Cash Cobain with support from Chow Lee, Bay Swag and others—along with its subsequent “afterparty” in Union Square, gave us a taste of what was to come for Cash and his unmistakable sound. Since then, Cobain has been on a run, dropping back-to-back singles, his latest being “while finding time to produce the newest collaboration between “Daylight” with Teezo Touchdown and Lancey Foux.
In an unlikely pairing, the two find themselves trading off verses off a dreamy piano beat backed by Cobain’s signature drill-based drum patterns and bass lines. The track is the first we’ve seen Teezo reach into his rapping bag in a minute while Lancey holds up the chorus: “She said, ‘I wanna love to the daylight’ / She said, ‘I wanna love to the day I die.'”
J. Cole — “Grippy”
While “Daylight” still gets its shine, Cobain’s polarizing release with J. Cole, “Grippy,” has been a central talking point of the internet for the past week. A remix to “Dunk Contest,” the aptly named track sees J. Cole chime in with several bars that many argue are thematically out of place in his consistent discography. Although not aligned with much of his traditional musical output, ‘Grippy’ is further proof that Cole is willing to experiment with new styles and embrace the new generation of artists.
Don Toliver — “Attitude”
The most notable and my personal favorite Slizzy release of the past month is “Attitude” — the third song off Don Toliver’s upcoming album — which features Charlie Wilson alongside Cobain. The track is a homage to Wilson, one of hip hop’s favorite collaborators, as it samples Pharrell and Snoop Dogg’s 2002 hit ‘Beautiful’ on which Wilson sings the chorus. ‘Attitude’ dropped alongside a music video that aligns with the creative vision for his upcoming album. A deep-fried, motorcycle-laced fantasy world in which Toliver is the main character.
Ice Spice — “Fisherrr (Remix)”
The only thing missing from ‘Fisherrr’, the indisputable sound of New York this year was Ice Spice, the equally viral artist that hails from the same neighborhood as Cobain. On the ‘Fisherrr’ remix, Spice brings her unmistakable “sexy drill” sound to the track, catching Cobain’s flow while adding a set of classic Ice Spice lyrics.
A Boogie — “Body”
On Body, Cobain links up with another Bronx-based artist A Boogie for a drill-based love song. The track comes in at number four on A Boogie’s newest album alongside features from Future, Mariah The Scientist, Fridayy, Young Thug, and Lil Durk.
Take any of the aforementioned songs and you will start to see the most intriguing aspect about Cobain in his ability to maintain a signature style while crisscrossing sub-genres. A trail of drill beats and distinctly “Cobain-esque” samples can be heard throughout any track he puts his tag on no matter the context.
