The infectious Sexy Drill sound, pioneered by the truly singular artist-producer Cash Cobain, represents a fun-first, female-friendly evolution of the dark and gritty NY Drill that had ruled the city since the late 2010s. After bubbling under the surface amongst cool kids in NYC over the last several years, in 2024 the signature sound of the Slizzy’s has finally arrived on the national stage.
Since he first dropped “Dunk Contest” in January, Cash has been dominating the New York airwaves and well beyond, in April being named Billboard’s Hip-Hop/R&B Rookie of the Month. Claiming the top spots on the NYC Apple Music Charts, first he had the whole city screaming “I don’t wanna talk about Marni!,” then doing the ‘Reemski’ dance, and now “Fisherrr” can be added to the long list of Slizzy catchphrases. And not to forget Chow Lee’s Cash-produced “Ms. Beautiful V” making its way up the charts.
In 2023, in addition to his collab with Drake and enthusiastic cosigns from big names Kai Cenat, Lil Yachty, Veeze and Travis Scott, Cash dropped his debut project, Pretty Girls <3 Slizzy. This year we’re seeing that title play out in real life, from the dozens of beautiful women that seem to follow Cash everywhere he goes to the cosigns pouring in from the likes of Sexyy Red, Cardi B, Rubi Rose, Pink Pantheress, Anycia and Karrahboo – with literally thousands of new videos being made every day. Now with the official Ice Spice Remix treatment, there’s no question that Sexy Drill (what once sounded like a jokey afterthought to some) is the hottest sound in the country right now… Fisherrr!
In true Slizzy fashion, Cash originally debuted “Fisherrr” (a stylized pronunciation of “for sure”) with longtime collaborator Bay Swag with a standout “From the Block” performance back in February. It immediately caught fire on account of the subtle vibey production (prod by Fckbwoy, Jiggi & Cash), the hugely sing-along-able refrains, and the palpable charisma between Cash and Bay as they take turns delivering raunchy, incredibly catchy bars back and forth at irregular intervals – not to mention the striking visual of a crowd of beautiful ladies rocking matching all-over print beanies calmly vibing out on the streets of NYC.
In March, the fun continued with another show stopping performance at an at-capacity On the Radar featuring many familiar faces from the Slizzy crew – including Vontee the Singer and the entire list of lovely ladies mentioned by name in the “Dunk Content” role call from Destiny to Jess to Millie, and of course Marni (but we don’t talk about her).
The “Fisherrr” frenzy reached an absolute fever pitch last week when word got out that Ice Spice would be hopping on the remix – so unbelievable to some that AI rumors began swirling. On Friday, any doubt was put to rest when the official remix dropped as NYC’s it-girl got fully into the Sexy Drill spirit with some slizzy bars of her own like “I’m pretty and sexy, I’m Munchable” and “Got a attitude, but I’m feelingless so I ain’t mad at you.”
The KZA-visual to accompany the remix was an all-out Bronx affair. We see Cash and Bay delivering their now legendary bars from a variety of classic NYC settings, from the pedestrian overpass to the subway stairs, and finally running into their favorite Slizettes at the local Chinese food spot. Ice Spice looks right at home amongst the Slizzies, with her subtle swag and drop-dead looks perfectly matching the vibe. And with Cash in his red leather Pelle Pelle jacket and Spice rocking a Camron-esque pink fur, the pair are truly looking like the freshly minted King and Queen of New York.
Whether he’s bringing the house down at On the Radar, pinky-locking with Drake, rocking the Jordan Brand Classic or literally birthing new stars left and right, Cash is the true definition of a trailblazer. Even at the height of the drill wave, he saw a vision for the sound that extended far beyond drilling and spinning. Fans of the movement are thrilled to see the sound catching on in a major way in 2024, and somehow it still seems like just the beginning for the Sexy Drill.
