Durkio just refuses to slow down.
The “What Happened To Virgil” superstar is still sliding off the success of his 7220 album — boasting a handful of solo and collaborative hits to boot — and is fresh off closing out Juice Wrld Day 2022 at the United Center in Chicago.
Released almost three weeks after 7220 went platinum, the collaborative LP is almost a nonstop cypher, as Durk passes the mic to varying members of OTF that we’ve seen on their previous projects, like Doodie Lo, Booka600, and the late, great King Von. Even outside of Durk’s inner circle and the more mainstream features are localized Chicago talent like Lil Zay Osama, who goes ballistic with him on “Seen It All.”
The best part of label-centric albums is that fans of Lil Durk get to hear the kind of talent that he surrounds himself with. A prime example being the song “Ain’t Hiding” by chief wuk — someone who appeared on previous OTF projects but is ultimately introducing himself to me with this track.
What an introduction it was. He slides with ease on one of the more decorated beats on the project, with his solo presence on the track being more than appropriate for someone that I now have my eye — and ear — on.
The rotating spotlight is both cordial and gleaming with comradery, as no prominent feature or moment seems to unfairly steal that spotlight in a distracting manner. Lil Durk clearly knows the sheer skill that he has with his OTF members and collaborators, and bringing everyone up to the production and sequencing that comes with a Billboard chart-topper like Durk makes each song hit that much harder — and each idea resonate that much more.
After his best year yet in 2021, Lil Durk continues to impress in 2022, even if it’s at its tail end. Thankfully, he brought his friends in OTF along for the ride, giving drill fans and beyond something to hold them over until the next inevitable Durk project.
