YG gets melodic on new single ‘Toxic’

With multiple high energy bangers under his belt this year, YG lets his smoother side take the wheel on his latest single “Toxic.”

Just a month removed from his Tyga, 21 Savage and BIA-assisted banger “Run,” YG has dropped off his first solo track since last October, including a legendary sample from the one and only Mary J. Blige.

The track was originally teased as a viral snippet via TikTok in late April, and officially was announced on Wednesday (Aug. 10). The single has gone through multiple cover art photos, including a picture of YG and Brittany Renner, as this marks the West Coast emcee’s third single of the year.

The track itself is a sultry R&B cut from the Compton-Bree superstar, discussing a “Toxic” relationship he has with a particular someone and the ups and downs that come with it. As previously mentioned, the track features a Mary J. Blige sample from her hit track “Be Happy,” which perfectly brings the track together acting as its main chorus. The sample works in YG’s favor, bouncing off of the idea that he just wants to be happy in a relationship and find true love.

All I really want (Yeah)

Is to be happy (Oh, yeah)

And to find a love that’s mine (Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah)

It would be so sweet (Hey)

All I really want (Oh)

Is to be happy (I wanna be happy, yeah)

And to find a love that’s mine (Yeah, yeah, yeah)

It would be so sweet

“Toxic” – YG

While YG is taking a more personal approach to his newest effort, his previous two drops this year have been electrifying hits with some of the biggest names of hip-hop. Aside from “Run,” YG also dropped off “Scared Money” with lyrical powerhouses J. Cole and Moneybagg Yo which landed on the Billboard Hot 100. The Cali native is also planning on sharing his sixth studio LP, Pray For Me, sometime this year.

While we wait for YG’s newest project, the tantalizing wordsmith looks to continue to feed fans with an impressive array of vibes all year long.
