midwxst, Denzel Curry run up a ‘Tally’ on new single

midwxst and Denzel Curry are one of the most exciting artists in their spaces for a reason. Building off a monumental 2022, the hyperpop-rap phenom and Florida’s Melt icon “Tally” up their wins with a new collaboration on Wednesday (Jan. 25).

Energetic with booming 808s and back-and-forth flows, both their styles collide seamlessly as they prove to have a chemistry unmatched. Wild “Wxst” guitars and triumphant sliding horns lead in Midwxst’s visceral wordplay, as his highly-emotive cadence quickly takes centerstage. Zel enters with a quirky “excuse my language” ad-lib, turning in yet another potent guest spot. It’s his fifth feature in just two months time.

Backed by a LA Noir, Casablanca-themed music video, the Old Hollywood cinematography bolsters Midwxst’s first big push into mainstream circles — aided by Curry’s enigmatic presence and industry standing. Along with “Tally,” the pair linked up with JASIAH and Matt Ox on “KILLERS AND ROBBERS” (Jan. 20) for a guitar-laden mosh-pit anthem.

Zel is having a feature run for the ages — jumpstarted by his charismatic verse on JELEEL!’s boisterous single “SHOTS!” in November. Recently linking up with Armani White on “GOATED” and ending 2022 with a guest spot on Redveil’s remix to “pgbaby,” Curry is counting up his wins — and influence — as the premier co-sign for rising talent. Zel alluded to these features — and an upcoming R&B album — during our conversation last August, discussing his studio album Melt My Eyez, See Your Future among other topics.

For midwxst, 2022 was a year of growth. Dropping off two mixtapes in BACK IN ACTION 3.0 and better luck next time, the Indiana-based rapper is gearing up for his official debut that should release sometime this year. “I’m focusing on my debut album,” he told us at Lollapalooza. “Some of the shit I have on that one is insane. The producers and features on there are wild. I’m boutta come out the cut with that, bro.” Until then, he’s shared a slew of SoundCloud cuts on his second account — including a small EP titled sorry4thewait.

“Tally” up another dub for Zel and Wxst, because this track is as classic as it looks.
