Doechii & Kodak Black — “What It Is (Block Boy)

Doechii returns with her first single of 2023 in grand fashion. Tapping “Super Gremlin” superstar Kodak Black for “What It Is (Block Boy), the Billboard Women in Music Rising Star recipient continues a tear that’s been backed by a slew of powerful co-signs. “What It Is (Block Boy)” arrives on the heels of a breakthrough 2022 for Doechii that delivered tracks like “Stressed,”“Crazy,” “Persuasive” (Doechii’s solo version and remix featuring SZA), and “Pro Freak” with Fatman Scoop and Smino.

“This song is a fusion of nostalgia and pop vibes,” Doechii said via release. “I feel like I’m showing off a side of my vocal range with this one that my fans haven’t really seen yet. I love using the old samples of “No Scrubs” and “Some Cut” to mix in some playful energy as well.

Syo — “Table Manners

Minding your manners is simple for rising R&B enigma Syo. The Houston crooner is rooted in contemplative melodies and introspective narratives, highlighting his full breadth of talent on his new 9-track EP Table Manners. Perception is key to Syo’s latest project, centered around the concept of looking at someone else’s plate at the table as a metaphor for personal and proverbial struggle.

Highlights in “snack” and “get you some” bring sonic inspirations of Lauryn Hill, Kendrick Lamar, Outkast, Sade and Lil Wayne to the forefront of his artistry — allowing Syo to maintain an energy completely outside the box. Striving to inject listeners with raw anecdotes from his life, Table Manners is an ear-perking listen dripped in voluptuous harmony.

“My passion in music comes from a childhood need to be heard… My parents never listened to me as a kid. I would get whooped for expressing emotion or thoughts. I eventually began to write them letters to explain how I felt about everything. But those got thrown away. That left me with a constant need to be heard, to be understood. Music became natural, lyrics became vital.”
